One Piece OP-01 Blue Bottom vs. White Bottom – What's the Difference?

One Piece OP-01 Blue Bottom vs. White Bottom – Was ist der Unterschied?

Romance Dawn OP-01 is not just any set. It is the first booster set of the One Piece Card Game, and as such, it holds a very special significance for many collectors.

However, anyone looking for an English One Piece OP-01 Romance Dawn Booster Box today will quickly come across two terms:

Blue Bottom and White Bottom.

But what do these terms actually mean? Are the cards different? Is Blue Bottom really the "1st Edition" of One Piece? And why do collectors pay significantly more for some Blue Bottom boxes?

We will explain the most important differences.

What does "Blue Bottom" mean for OP-01?

The name is surprisingly simple: a Blue Bottom OP-01 Booster Box has a blue bottom on the English Romance Dawn booster box.

These boxes come from the early production and delivery phases of OP-01 and are therefore considered particularly interesting by collectors.

Especially when sealed – meaning still in their original packaging – Blue Bottom boxes have become coveted collector's items.

However, it is important to note:

"Blue Bottom" is not an official First Edition designation from Bandai.

The One Piece Card Game does not have a classic "1st Edition" stamp for OP-01, like collectors might know from other Trading Card Games.

Blue Bottom is rather used by the community as a distinguishing feature of the early OP-01 era.

What is a White Bottom OP-01 Booster Box?

For later produced OP-01 Romance Dawn Booster Boxes, the design was changed.

The bottom of these box versions is white instead of blue, hence the name:

White Bottom.

White Bottom boxes came onto the market after the early Blue Bottom deliveries and are therefore usually associated with later reprints or later production runs of Romance Dawn.

For players, a White Bottom box is by no means "worse."

For sealed collectors, however, the early Blue Bottom variant is much more interesting.

The biggest difference: Pre-Errata and Post-Errata cards

This is where it gets particularly exciting for collectors.

For various cards from the first OP-01 print, text adjustments were made after release.

These are called:

Errata.

Bandai corrected various card texts in later productions to formulate effects more clearly or to align them more closely with the original Japanese wording.

A well-known example is:

OP01-016 Nami

In the original English version, the effect was formulated differently than in the later corrected variant.

Also cards like:

  • Trafalgar Law OP01-002

  • Caribou OP01-007

  • Jinbe OP01-014

  • Nico Robin OP01-017

  • Bartholomew Kuma OP01-074

and other OP-01 cards received corresponding text corrections.

Early OP-01 products can therefore contain so-called Pre-Errata cards.

Later productions, however, contain the corrected Post-Errata versions.

Does every Blue Bottom box automatically contain Pre-Errata cards?

No – and this point is extremely important.

On the internet, Blue Bottom boxes are often simply equated with:

"First Print / Pre-Errata"

However, it is not that clear.

There were several early production or delivery phases with Blue Bottom packaging. Therefore, based on the blue bottom alone, it is not possible to determine with absolute certainty which specific print phase is inside a sealed box.

Bandai itself points out in its official errata information that the production date cannot be determined from the product packaging.

Therefore, the following applies:

Blue Bottom

Early and particularly interesting packaging variant for collectors, which may contain Pre-Errata cards.

White Bottom

Later packaging variant, associated with the corrected print versions.

Therefore, anyone buying a sealed Blue Bottom box should be cautious about statements such as "guaranteed Wave 1" or "guaranteed Pre-Errata", unless the origin of the box can be additionally documented.

Blue Bottom vs. White Bottom at a glance

Collector's premium Usually significantly higher Lower

Are there better pull rates in Blue Bottom?

There is no official basis for this.

Therefore, a Blue Bottom box should not be purchased because one hopes for better chances of Manga Shanks, Parallel Arts, or other Chase Cards.

The special value lies primarily in:

the early production, the packaging variant, possible Pre-Errata cards, and the historical significance for the first One Piece Card Game set.

For many collectors, a sealed Blue Bottom box is therefore the actual collectible itself.

And that's precisely why many of these boxes are no longer opened.

Why is OP-01 Romance Dawn so important?

Romance Dawn was the beginning of the One Piece Card Game.

With it, OP-01 possesses something that later sets can never replicate:

It is Set Number 1.

The set also includes many of the most famous characters from One Piece and some now legendary cards and Parallel Arts.

For long-term collectors, several factors therefore converge with OP-01:

  • first One Piece Card Game Booster Set

  • early print variants

  • Pre-Errata cards

  • limited number of unopened early boxes

  • strong international One Piece fanbase

  • high historical significance within the TCG

A well-preserved, factory-sealed Blue Bottom box, in particular, is therefore far more than just a box with 24 booster packs today.

It is a piece of the early history of the One Piece Card Game.

Should you buy Blue Bottom or White Bottom?

That depends on what you are looking for.

Do you want to open OP-01?

Then a White Bottom box might be the more sensible choice.

You get Romance Dawn without paying the high collector's premium of an early Blue Bottom box for opening.

Do you collect sealed products?

Then Blue Bottom is much more exciting.

The historical reference to early OP-01 productions and the smaller available quantity make this version particularly interesting.

Do you want to collect Pre-Errata cards?

Then early products are relevant – but you should note that a blue bottom alone is no guarantee for a very specific print wave within the sealed box.

How do I recognize an OP-01 Blue Bottom Box?

The easiest clue is exactly where the name suggests:

on the underside of the booster box.

With a Blue Bottom version, the corresponding bottom area is blue.

In later versions, it is white.

Especially for high-priced purchases, we therefore recommend always asking for:

  • photos of the underside

  • photos of all sides of the box

  • the condition of the original seal

  • damage and dents

  • and, if possible, the origin of the box

to be shown.

For high-priced sealed TCG products, not only the edition must be correct – the condition of the box can also have a significant impact on the collector's value.

Conclusion: Blue Bottom is the Collector's Version of OP-01

For players, both versions contain the same basic OP-01 set.

For collectors, however, the difference is significant.

Blue Bottom represents the early phase of One Piece Romance Dawn and may contain Pre-Errata cards. White Bottom represents later productions with corrected card texts.

Precisely because Bandai never provided OP-01 with an official First Edition designation, the Blue Bottom packaging has become one of the most important distinguishing features of early English Romance Dawn products.

Anyone who collects One Piece sealed can hardly avoid OP-01 Blue Bottom.
